03.1 / COMMUNICATING

Most systems guess. This one talks.

A conventional system is a light switch with extra steps — the thermostat can say on or off, and that is the whole vocabulary. A communicating system holds a conversation. The ComfortLink™ II XL1050 and the equipment trade information continuously, so the system tunes itself to what is actually happening in your house instead of slamming to full power and shutting back off.

WORKING DEMONSTRATION OF THE XL1050 — TRY IT. SIMULATED, NOT CONNECTED TO A REAL SYSTEM.

TWO-WAY, CONTINUOUSLY — NOT ONE-WAY ON/OFF

  • It modulates instead of slamming. Matched with variable-speed equipment, compressor and fan speeds move in real time rather than jumping between full blast and nothing. Long, low, quiet runs — which is also exactly what pulls humidity out of South Texas air.
  • Humidity is a setting, not a side effect. The XL1050 holds temperature and humidity, instead of leaving moisture as whatever happens to fall out of the coil.
  • Zone by zone. ComfortLink II zoning compatible with a Z-Wave bridge built in — so the upstairs that never cools becomes its own zone instead of a permanent argument with the downstairs.
  • Seven-inch color touchscreen, and your phone. Four schedules a day across seven days, remote control and real-time diagnostics through the Trane Home™ app, Wi-Fi or hard-wired Ethernet. Speaks Control4, Crestron and Savant if the house is already automated.

On the card we leave on your table, this is the row that reads Communicatingsee it on the card ↓

What the control is actually running. Supply air off the ceiling, insulation in the walls, hardwood over a conditioned floor — and one thermostat holding 72° across all of it. A communicating system reads this room continuously. A conventional one just guesses at it.
04 / ON THE TABLE

The card we leave on your table.

When a Cowboy sits down with you about a new system, this is what comes out of the folder. Five levels side by side — efficiency, staging, what each one actually includes — and every guarantee and warranty printed on the back. No mystery sheet, no “let me call my manager.” You keep the card.

Enlarge either side to read it exactly as printed. Which level fits your home depends on a load calculation — square footage, insulation, ductwork and windows — not on a number off a card.

14 TIPS · SCROLL OR SWIPE →
01CRITICAL HERE

Bigger is not better

An oversized system blasts cold, hits the setpoint and shuts off before it has pulled any moisture out of the air — leaving your house cold and clammy. The only honest way to size a system is a load calculation on your actual home.

SOURCE: TRANE
02CRITICAL HERE

Keep the drain line clear

Water near the indoor unit, rust, or a musty smell when the AC runs means the condensate line is plugging up. San Antonio humidity makes far more condensate than most of the country, and hard water speeds up the scale.

SOURCE: TRANE
03CRITICAL HERE

Aim for 30–50% humidity

The EPA range is 30–50%, with 30–40% ideal in summer. Above 60% you get mold, dust mites, warped floors and worse asthma — and down here your AC alone may not keep up with it.

SOURCE: TRANE
04CRITICAL HERE

Leaky ducts waste money

A typical home loses 20–30% of its conditioned air to duct leaks. In a 140° Texas attic that isn't just loss — it's pulling scorching, dusty, unfiltered air into the house.

SOURCE: TRANE
05

Change the filter on schedule

Trane's window is every 3 to 9 months depending on the unit. Our dust and cedar pollen push you toward the short end of that, not the long end. Check your manual for the exact interval.

SOURCE: TRANE
06

Higher MERV isn't always better

A denser filter catches more, but it also restricts airflow — the biggest number on the shelf isn't automatically the right one. And the arrow on the filter has to point toward the furnace or air handler.

SOURCE: TRANE
07

Know your SEER2 minimum

SEER2 replaced SEER in 2023 with a tougher test that reflects real duct pressure. Texas falls under the stricter Southern floor: 14.3+ under 45,000 BTU, 13.8+ above it.

SOURCE: TRANE
08

Give the condenser two feet

Keep plants and landscaping two feet back on every side and aim mower discharge away from it. Dirty coils make the system work harder. Garden hose only — a pressure washer bends the fins.

SOURCE: TRANE
09

78° is a starting point

Every degree above 72° saves up to about 3% on cooling, but 78 is outside a lot of people's comfort zone. Nudge up a degree at a time and lean on fans, blinds and dehumidification to make it feel fine.

SOURCE: TRANE
10

Book the spring tune-up

One professional visit a year, scheduled in spring before the season turns. With a cooling season as long as ours, a pre-season tune-up here is closer to mandatory than optional.

SOURCE: TRANE
11

Set it back, don't shut it off

A 7–10 degree setback for eight hours a day cuts heating and cooling costs about 10% a year. Just don't set back so far that humidity climbs while you're out.

SOURCE: TRANE
12

Don't close vents in empty rooms

It feels thrifty and it isn't. The system needs at least 75% of your vents open to move air correctly — closing them off unbalances everything and makes the unit work harder.

SOURCE: TRANE
13

Keep return vents uncovered

Returns pull air back to the equipment to restart the cycle, so blocking one throws off pressure across the whole system. Keep furniture, rugs and drapes off them.

SOURCE: TRANE
14

Refrigerant is changing to R-454B

R-454B has a global warming potential more than 75% lower than R-410A, and the transition started in 2024. Here's the part nobody tells you: your existing R-410A system can still be serviced.

12 / STRAIGHT ANSWERS

Honest advice, no runaround.

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

It could be airflow, a dirty filter, low refrigerant, the outdoor unit, frozen coils, a thermostat issue, or a failing component. Because San Antonio heat puts heavy demand on cooling systems, it's best to schedule service before the problem gets worse — we'll identify the cause and recommend the right repair.

How cold should my AC blow?

A healthy system cools about 15–20° below the outdoor temperature. In peak San Antonio heat it may run longer, but it should still produce cold air and pull humidity. If it feels weak or warm, have it checked.

Do you offer 24/7 emergency service?

Yes — holidays, weekends, the middle of the night. If the weather doesn't wait, neither do we. Call (210) 495-7771 any time.

Are you a Trane dealer?

Yes — we're an authorized Trane dealer and Comfort Specialist, and we service every major brand, so you're never locked in.

What is the 3-minute rule for AC?

Your system should have a brief delay before restarting after it shuts off — this protects the compressor and prevents unnecessary wear. Most modern thermostats manage it automatically. Frequent on/off cycling can signal short cycling or another issue worth inspecting.

What is the most common furnace problem?

Poor airflow is one of the most common — it makes rooms feel unevenly heated and lowers efficiency. If your furnace isn't heating properly, cycles too often, or makes unusual noises, we can get it working safely and reliably.

What areas do you serve?

San Antonio and the surrounding Hill Country — Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Wilson, and Medina counties. See the full range above.
